This site is dedicated to sharing banjo tablature in variou
s muscial genres. 
The particular technique of playing emphasized on this blog will be what is known as Clawhammer or Frailing.
The clawhammer technique of picking is primarily a down-picking style. The hand assumes a claw-like shape and the strumming finger is kept stiff, striking the strings by the motion of the hand at the wrist. Players that use this technique typically downpick the strings with only the thumb and middle or index finger, flicking the string with the back of the fingernail.
Although Clawhammer is typically used to play American Old-Time music, the purpose of this site is to share tabature of many types of musical genre that can be played, using this picking style, which I have learned and enjoy so much.
If you have any requests to find a particular tune in clawhammer banjo tablature, please leave a request here. If I know of the piece exisiting on another site, I will direct you to it. If I do not know of it residing elsewhere, I will consider tabbing it and posting it here as time permits.
Note: You will need a PDF viewer to open these attachments. Also, within most of these PDF files you will find a midi attachment which will allow you to hear how the tablature will sound. Of course, you will need the appropriate software to listen to the midi file.

Here is a link to a two finger thumb lead version of Coo coo Bird. It isn’t clawhammer, but it’s also not too difficult (much easier than Scruggs) to convert over, and it’s also based on Clarence Ashley’s version.

I do not yet have any of Mary Cox’s books or tabs yet. I have heard a lot of great things about them, though. I had to create my version directly from the melody, which is my preferred way to create arrangements nowadays. Doing so helps me remember where in the melody I want to add some emphasis.

I put a basic tab of Raleigh and Spencer (aka Rylan Spencer etc.) on my webpage: http://enyepa.110mb.com/index.htm . I arranged it from Tommy Jarrell’s fiddle version. Some tunes don’t sound a lot like the fiddle versions when played solo on banjo, and this is one of them. But I worked really hard to get the basic melody and timing right. If a banjo player plays this version along with TJ’s recording, then (s)he’ll see how close they are. Anyhow, there’s a lot of room for personal adjustments in this tab. I may post an adjusted tab later for this tune later.

I tend to find samplings of some modern music, in several sites. MIke Iverson does a nice job with some blues pieces at http://www.bluesageband.com/Tabs.html. Banjo Hangout as a good deal of materials, though most of it is not in clawhammer. I’ll keep my eyes open though. If I see any site more devoted to what you describe, I’ll let you know.

I found a version of Pretty Polly, but the tab is for a two finger version. The good news is that it’s pretty easily converted to clawhammer. Scroll down till you get to the g minor section. Hope it helps.

I’ve been struggling with Bluegrass for a few months now (getting a long-term bassists fingers to move at speed is just not going to happen) and have decided that I’d be better off heading down the clawhammer route. I have put away my Scruggs tabs and picked up my clawhammer tutor book and CD but would like some recommendation of tunes/players I can put on my iPad for inspiration.

You could give Steve Martin a try. Yes, the comedian, he’s also an amazing banjo player. Some others are Grandpa Jones, Stringbean, Wade Ward, Mike Seeger, Tommy Jarrell, Doc Watson, Ralph Stanley, and of course, the great Uncle Dave Macon. Even Neil Young and Eric Clapton have a few clawhammer songs floating around out there somewhere. Give Old Crow Medicine Show a listen too, they have a bunch of clawhammer songs. Try Worried Mary (open D tuning), Bobcat Tracks (open G tuning) or Don’t Ride That Horse (also in open G). Hope this helps.

I couldn’t find any tabs of this song so I decided to make one. Its one of the songs I wanted to learn when I first started playing banjo. I hope this helps some people. If you have any improvements to make, please feel free to do so. I haven’t tabbed Dave Rawlings’s guitar playing in the song, just given some chords. Banjo is played claw hammer style.
Guitar has a capo on 2 and is basically just a repeat of A and C (or what is actually B and D because of capo) with a bit of stompin’ beat to it.

But get yourself an instructor at least for 4 months or so you can get real time critique and correct any bad habits before you get set in those ways. There is no substitute for live instruction.

Hi , I’m Jules and I’m on the tractor seeding canola in Saskatchewan. I’ve been trying to find a few songs that I enjoy that I could play and sing with on my banjo.
The guy that got me aware or claw hammer style is Willie Watson of old crow, his two songs Mexican cowboy and long john dean are amazing and would be some of my aspirations.
