Thank you for posting these songs. It is hard to find good gospel songs for clawhammer it seems like and these songs you posted have a bit more depth than many of the other gospel songs that are tab for clawhammer. Great job thanks!

I am looking for a nice version (something other than just melody) of I’ll Fly Away. Any ideas?

    GP,

You can find several versions of “I’ll Fly Away” at http://www.freetabs.org/otherinst.htm/.

Just scroll down to the clawhammer section.

A FRIEND JUST SENT THIS OVER TO ME. I HAVE RELEASED 15 CD RECORDINGS IN THE PAST 20 YEARS PLUS 5 TEACHING VIDEOS/DVDS. ONE OF THOSE 15 I CALLED “PAPA” COMING FROM THE ARAMAIC WORD “ABBA”.
THAT ONE WAS RECORDED IN 1993 AND IT IS ALL HYMNS. I HAVE FORGOTTEN THE NUMBER AND MOST HAVE CLAWHAMMER BANJO INVOLVED IN ALL THE HYMNS. THERE ARE A FEW OTHER INSTRUMENTS PLUS ALL HAVE SINGING WITH HARMONY ON SOME. MOST EVERYTHING THERE WAS A STEP UP FROM ‘ILL FLY AWAY’. NOW, I REALLY DO NOT BELIEVE IN TAB. FAR BETTER TO LISTEN AND LEARN THE MELODY AND THE RHYTHM. THE FINGERING ON THESE HYMNS IS NOT HARD OR COMPLEX. THESE HYMNS WERE POPULAR IN RURAL CHURCHES STARTING WITH THE FIRST GREAT AWAKENING IE MID-1700s. MOST WERE AFTER SECOND GREAT AWAKENING IN 1790s THRU 1900.. ANYWAY, THE RECORDING IS OUT OF PRINT; IT WAS A CASSETTE. I COULD HAVE SOME DUPLICATED MADE ON BLANK CDs IF ANYONE WANTED. OF ALL MY 15 CD RECORDINGS OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS, I WOULD STILL CHOOSE “PAPA” AS MY FAVORITE. PARTLY BECAUSE IT FITS INTO MY BELIEF SYSTEM.

    Thanks for the post, Dwight!

Do you have a website where we can find and/ or purchase and download these hymms? I, for one, would be interested in having what you describe above as “PAPA” in my personal collection of CH tunes.

    Thanks.

Hey Barry–Dan Levenson’s Gospel Tunes has a good version of this old hymn in G tuning–it is really fun to play. The book also has lots of other gospel favorites such as Amazing Grace and The Great Speckled Bird. (I love this tune.) You can get it at Amazon–it’s a Mel Bay production. You will enjoy it.
      Happy claw-hammering…
      Carl
Oh yes, almost forgot–it has The Old Rugged Cross in double C tuning. So check it out.
